F. G. Vaughn Marshall earned his B. Sc. (math-physics),  PD Ed. and then taught math at a Calgary high school for five years where he was twice recognized for excellence in teaching. He subsequently earned his law degree, winning some awards and  prizes in the process, and was also granted clerkships with the Attorney General  in the two summer breaks during law school, providing him the experience of conducting over 100  Provincial Court trials by the time of his graduation in 1979 near the top of his law class. Marshall was articled to top labour lawyer David Laird and admitted to the bar by the renowned  Milt Harradence.

In his first twenty-five  years of practice, Vaughn Marshall spent most of his time conducting court cases and other legal proceedings – bench trials, jury trials, preliminary inquiries, hearings, depositions, appeals – and watching leading lawyers conduct their cases in court. For twenty years Marshall acted for banks, defending them when sued in lender liability cases and as their plaintiffs’ counsel to pursue defaulting business borrowers in multi-million-dollar collection lawsuits initiated by the banks.

In addition to the many banking lawsuits he handled, Marshall acted in dozens of criminal cases in his early career, conducting both jury and judge only trials defending numerous individuals accused of crimes ranging from stock fraud to murder.  He also acted as Crown Counsel for a short period and in private practice conducted prosecutions under business and other Federal  compliance statutes.  NEXT>>
