Prior to university,  Marshall served two years in the army engineers (reserves) where he was trained in bridge assembly and wireless field communications. Following that, he worked for two years in the electrical industry with Calgary Power.  He first used computers in 1970 at the   U of A   to perform a statistical analysis of research he had conducted for a term paper on the subject of the social and psychological value differences  between City Policeman and Mounties.  When he became a lawyer, he was an early adopter of computers (see story)    (see cover),  fully incorporating laptops into his litigation practice. At the request of the Chief Justice of Alberta, Marshall sat for ten years  on the Court of Appeal's first advisory committee overseeing the implementation of technology in Alberta Courts.

Big banking lawsuits mushroomed from the 1981 collapse of Western Canada's economy which followed on the heels of Ottawa's October 28, 1980, announcement of  the National Energy Program, following which Mr. Marshall spent most of his time acting for big banks in multimillion dollar commercial collection actions and defending them in lender liability and improper receivership court cases launched by corporate borrowers who alleged their businesses had been destroyed by the improper conduct and broken promises of banks.
All of these were tough, hard fought lawsuits, many involving prominent businessmen such as Nelson Skalbania, Peter Petrasuk,  Peter Thomas, Peter Pocklington to name a few.
